WASHINGTON, D.C. ñ Today, Congressman Ted Poe (TX-02) cosponsored and voted in support of the Vietnam Human Rights Act of 2013. This bill seeks to prohibit U.S. nonhumanitarian aid to the Vietnam government that exceeds the amounts designated in FY2012 unless the President confirms to Congress that Vietnam has made significant progress with respect to promoting freedom and democracy in their country.
ìVietnam is still a communist country that systematically oppresses its people,î said Congressman Poe. ìWe should not send money to any government that robs the people of its own freedom. This bill will forbid additional money from going to Vietnam until we see evidence of an improved human rights record.î
